Renewable Energy Certificates Market (RECs)

A global market where certificates representing renewable electricity generation are bought and sold.

The Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) Market is a global environmental market where certificates representing renewable electricity generation are bought and sold. RECs enable the environmental attributes of renewable power generation to be verified, transferred and reported independently from the physical electricity flow.

This market allows companies to match electricity consumption with renewable generation, support renewable energy deployment and meet sustainability and climate reporting requirements.

What Are Renewable Energy Certificates?

Renewable Energy Certificates are environmental certificates that verify renewable electricity generation.
Each REC represents 1 MWh of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Companies use RECs to:

  • Verify renewable electricity consumption
  • Match energy use with green power
  • Support renewable energy investments
  • Report renewable energy claims in sustainability disclosures

RECs are traded within international and regional environmental markets, providing flexibility and transparency for corporate energy strategies.

Types of Renewable Energy Certificates

Different REC schemes operate across regions:

  • YEK-G (Türkiye)
    • Standard owner / governing body: Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) (Türkiye)
    • System operator: EPİAŞ
    • Based on national energy legislation
    • An official, regulator-led certificate scheme operating under Turkish energy market regulations
  • I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate)
  • Standard body: I-REC Standard Foundation (Netherlands)
  • System operator: I-REC Registry Platform (3. Party verification bodies)
  • Not based on national energy legislation
  • Operates under a contractual and standard-based framework
  • Designed for voluntary, international use

Guarantees of Origin (GoO)

  • Standard owner / governing body: European Union
  • Registry system: National Issuing Bodies coordinated by AIB
  • Based on European Union legislation (Renewable Energy Directive)
  • Issued by national issuing bodies and operationally coordinated within the AIB framework

RECs represent electricity generated from solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass sources.

Renewable Energy Certificates for Buyers

For buyers, the REC market provides a certificate-based verification system that matches electricity consumption with renewable generation.

For each 1 MWh of renewable electricity produced, one REC is issued. Buyers purchase and retire certificates to link their electricity consumption to renewable sources, enabling transparent and traceable Scope 2 emission reductions.

Buyer benefits include:

  • Matching electricity consumption with renewable energy
  • Alignment with RE100, CSRD, CDP and sustainability reporting frameworks
  • Access to global certification systems such as I-REC and GoO
  • Flexibility through diverse pricing and certificate options

REC Market Advantages for Sellers

For renewable energy producers, the REC market enables generation to be certified and monetized, creating an additional revenue stream beyond electricity sales.

Natta Energy supports producers by converting renewable generation into RECs and connecting them with institutional and corporate buyers, ensuring that environmental value is fully recognized and commercialized.

Seller advantages with Natta Energy

  • Market-aligned pricing of REC and environmental value flows
  • End-to-end operational management of certification cycles
  • Access to corporate and institutional buyers
  • Tracking and reporting support
